Gemini 2 and the rise of multi-modal AI
Google's AI "product splurge" is about to get more fascinating in 2025.
On 26 January 2014, Google confirmed its acquisition of DeepMind for a price reportedly ranging between $400 million and $650 million. Ten years later and after dozens of AI startups have splintered out of Google Brain and Google Deepmind (now merged), and with the advent of Generative AI and ChatGPT, Google has been under pressure.
In a seemingly heroic effort, Google has managed to embed Generative AI features in nearly all of their products and have a number of promising prototypes, including the now viral NotebookLM. Google, along with Amazon backed Anthropic and Microsoft backed OpenAI are among the world’s bleeding edge frontier LLM builders.
Google in the last couple of years have fiercely fought to win back talent, try to rethink their Search journey, leverage Generative AI for Google Cloud’s growth and significantly improve their products with Generative AI features. We think of OpenAI as one of the most prolific Generative AI product companies, but Google is often underestimated here.
Now Google has released Gemini 2 along with new Realtime Multimodal API, powered by Gemini 2.0 Flash! Google has lowered the cost of LLMs and made them more accessible than ever before. The benchmarks also tell that story in terms of the performance of their Models.
