World Economic Forum Report, Warnings from Microsoft and Hinton, Future of Jobs Report.
there is a ⬛ Black Mirror vibe coming to A.I. re: future of work and automation potential.
Hey Everyone,
I’m pretty interested in the big picture on things. I have that brain that sees patterns in the macro data.
While the layoffs keep being ticked off in technology in 2023, we are starting to see some weird warnings about what is to come.
Chegg shares drop more than 40% after company says ChatGPT is killing its business
The running total of layoffs for 2023 based on full months to date is 168,243, according to Layoffs.fyi. So the Tech layoffs conducted to date this year (we aren’t even half way through 2023) currently exceed the total number of tech layoffs in 2022, according to the data in the tracker.
More layoffs directly relating to A.I. and automation are being foretold.
“We must regulate AI,” FTC Chair Lina M. Khan says
While experts estimate how probable the arrival of AGI is imminently, what’s clear is a lot of bad actors using A.I. and job losses are going to emerge.
Some of my best performing articles to date in 2023 have been about the future of work.
and
Yet even the companies that have accelerated A.I. the most seem to be weirdly aware of how much carnage it’s going to cause. The truth is we aren’t even able to regulate the monetization of the data of kids and our most vulnerable on Meta or TikTok. How will we regulate A.I.?

Yet Microsoft stands to gain in both cybersecurity profits and businesses seeking to automate more of their roles with A.I. Does that make them a good actor? And how about those that stand the most to profit in all of this? Microsoft better get their lawyers ready.
Reid Hoffman, Sam Altman and company? They have mostly good stuff to say about the advent of A.I.
The Venture Capitalists around A.I. would prefer we take an “optimistic long-term” view.
Meanwhile in standard Google PR style, Google DeepMind are now boasting about how close we are to AGI (WSJ).
Artificial general intelligence, a system in which computers have human-level cognitive abilities, could be achievable within a few years, said Google DeepMind Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis.
Mr. Hassabis, speaking on May 2nd, 2023 at The Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything Festival, said the speed of AI research could accelerate from its already-rapid pace.
But perhaps its the quotes from Hinton that are sparking the most interest for me, along with Yuval Noah Harari.
The Hinton quote that blew me away? It’s this one.
While I was recently criticized by a former member of the DoD, I did some digging. It turns out a lot of people are on to them.
“The US government inevitably has a lot of concerns around national security. And I tend to disagree with them,” he told the Guardian. “For example, I’m sure that the defense department considers that the only safe hands for this stuff is the US defense department – the only group of people to actually use nuclear weapons. - Geoffrey Hinton
But I want to dive into the epic World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report.
Let’s look a bit closer at their projections and those of the 803 companies that employ a total of 11.3 million workers in 45 different economies around the world are actually saying:
