Hey Everyone,
In 2023, the novelty of ChatGPT wore off pretty fast. OpenAI can claim annualized revenue of $1.6 Billion but little path to profitability given their talent and compute costs.
What seemed like a neat product around March, 2023 quickly become pretty boring. To remain relevant in 2024 and beyond, OpenAI needs to do a few things with ChatGPT. These include personalizing it to us better, creating a better human interface, and a form factor that’s actually scalable as compared to a text box at $20 a month.
They need to do something that’s actually useful, convenient and has relevance to our lives - that can attract and retain daily active users, and it’s NOT the ChatGPT we know today or this army of apparent copilots, chatbots and tools. These aren’t sustainable revenue makers because they don’t provide enough value, entertainment or convenience.
That OpenAI recently cited their user numbers in terms of weekly users was a very bad sign.
There aren’t many paths to victory for OpenAI here, but there is a way. I’m going to speculate here.
