Prediction: "Artificial Imagination" will be born in 2023 with ChatGPT and LaMDA Rivalry

You’ve heard of Artificial Intelligence, but what about Generative A.I. augmenting our “artificial imagination”? That’s basically what’s occurring with text-to-image and davinci-003 based tools like ChatGPT.

We always imagined A.I. would make us smarter, but it’s also enabling us to imagine more possibilities and simulate our own imagination and creativity. This is actually surprising to some people. That A.I. would intersect art, design, writing, marketing and automating things like Email, sales copy and digital content wasn’t seen as an emergent possibility just a few years ago.

Artificial Imagination

The range of tasks mostly “creative”, that ChatGPT can help with is a moment in Artificial Imagination. While text-to-image products like Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, DALL-E 2 are impressive, it’s the capabilities of ChatGPT that leads us tow new ways of creating content and automating chatbots that feels like a new trend.

• It was released two weeks ago, and in just five days hit a million users.

• It’s being used so much that its servers have reached capacity several times.

• Three sources briefed on OpenAI's recent pitch to investors said the organization expects $200 million in revenue next year and $1 billion by 2024, according to Reuters.

This last point is important because it means OpenAI has leverage to ask for more $Billions from Microsoft in the next funding round. Could the A.I. lab startup become a multi-billion dollar company and one of the leaders of Generative A.I.?

And what will be the artificial imagination products that result from it? A lot of A.I. as you know is neither artificial or particularly intelligent. A.I. as a term is a bit of marketing hype misdemeanor. So how will humans actually be augmented by A.I.? It’s surprisingly in more creative tasks of manipulating code, generating content as a first draft, or designing the visual elements of a project, for example.

ChatGPT is Popular Because It’s Useful

GPT-3.5 and davinci-003 have made Chatbot ChatGPT a sensation due to its widely utility and cited utility across industries. It’s genuinely useful for a wide range of tasks, from creating software to generating business ideas to writing a wedding toast. While China ponders who to regulate Generative A.I., the free market will produce competitors to OpenAI like Stability.AI. and Jasper.AI that will eventually lead to considerable innovation.

It’s also possible that Microsoft will acquire OpenAI leading to a snowball effect of Cloud players like Google and Amazon buying their way into Generative A.I. dominance to keep up with the leaders.

A.I.’ capability with the Generative A.I. movement in the 2020s could reshape our collective Artificial Imagination. That is ultimately an A.I. for good application. Companies like Canva, Adobe and others are already racing to leverage the technology.

OpenAI, the company that developed it, is already being discussed as a potential Google slayer. Other startups are already using davini-003 with voice commands integrated with Google like ChatSonic.

In 2023 we’ll see what happens with the emergence of OpenAI’s GPT-4 and the other startups involved in Generative A.I. as well as more major Venture Capitals getting skin in the game. This may lead to what I call the breakthrough of “Artificial Imagination”.

Now imagine robots we can converse with capable of augmenting our search, artificial imagination and able to interact in real useful dialogue? That’s also coming in the later 2020s.

ChatGPT opens up our sci-fi imagination of what becomes possible for human civilization. And that’s just with GPT-3.5 capabilities.

OpenAI was most recently valued at $20 billion in a secondary share sale. Nobody knows even how ChatGPT works, since OpenAI has not been open about it.

The chatbot takes advantage of a number of technical advances published in open scientific literature in the past couple of decades. But any innovations unique to it are secret. OpenAI could well be trying to build a technical and business moat to keep others out. - The Conversation

I’ve written about RLHF that is a major part of how these tools get better. We know apps like ByteDance have the best data to be able to do this even better with apps like TikTok, Douyin an others. We’ve seen the papers of ByteDance on this, and they are impressive.

We mustn’t assume that OpenAI or Microsoft will have a monopoly on this technology. Google’s LaMDA is waiting in the wings and will also likely launch in 2023, with an even more capable and realistic chatbot. These chatbots will stimulate and boost us with Artificial Imagination.

Not only will they help us automate tasks, they will help us think of workflows and building in a different context and simulate some of our own creative capabilities, which just a few years ago we believed were uniquely human. This has captured the imagination of our attention with regards to ChatGPT.
