Taiwan has allowed the US to mortally wound their semi-conductor industry just as the US did to Japan in the 1980s/90s.

TSMCs success was built in a particular cultural setting. You can't simply take a factory from Taiwan and drop it in Arizona and expect it to work.

TSMC is going to be forced to jump an ever increasing set of hoops to show its US technology does not leak out of the US - and that includes to Europe, Japan or Taiwan. By pouring money and tech into the US TSMC will starve their home in Taiwan of money and R & D and allow mainland Chinese companies to pass TSMC in both price and quality.

If Taiwan and TSMC had stared down US attempts at blackmail in 2017 and continued to supply Chinese mainland companies they would now be in a far stronger position.
