Hey Everyone,

As some of you know I’m a ‘fledgling evangelist’ for Substack’s Technology category. I’ve been advocating for it to be broken down into more sensible and specialized categories.

This influx of publications in the Tech Category is still pretty awesome if you are looking for professional education and insights in things like on entrepreneurship, startup growth, product, venture capital trends, AI, career tips, emerging tech, software engineering or data engineering.

I’m a technology enthusiast not an engineer by trade so this means I was very excited in 2023 when more engineering and machine learning content became available on Substack. While Substack was founded in 2017, for all intents and purposes 2023 was the first major year its Tech section actually got going and I expect much of the same in terms of momentum in 2024. So if you are thinking about starting a tech Newsletter, it’s almost like new virgin territory here.

Why Make this Guide to Engineering Newsletters?

  1. Near the end of 2022, more professionals on LinkedIn began to realize the opportunity as software engineering and Generative A.I. material became more popular and accessible where sharing content actually empowered their careers. With so many tech layoffs in 2023 and again in 2024, being a thought leader became a way to stand out from the crowd.

  2. As a general guide, I wanted to make a informal list of some of the top Engineering based Newsletters on Substack.

  • Here I lean in on Software engineering, data engineering and machine learning and even including some related Technology career and leadership (advice) content to a lesser extent. Neither is this an exhaustive list. The focus is on Engineering though, for my most recent AI lists (there are several) go here.

  • The goal of this list is to give a software engineer or worker in tech (e.g. data engineer, machine learning, etc…) some good to great Newsletter content to grow with and be informed by.

  • The cumulative value of these Newsletters is off the charts though I can guarantee you that. This is because these are some of the best Newsletters around Engineering, software, data, and technology, leadership, interviews and career management I could find.

But with that being said, let’s get into it.
