The Rise of Nation State Large Language Models and A.I.
The era of National Sovereign A.I. is approaching, the CBDCs of Generative A.I.
Hey Everyone,
Just as China beat the world to CBDCs, I see a high probability that China will leverage an A.I. supremacy (archives) arms race on developing their own version of GPT-5, or the equivalent.
So what the heck am I talking about? It’s nothing particularly surprising. Microsoft aren’t idiots, so what did Brad Smith recently say?
"We see three at the absolute forefront," Smith said in an interview in Tokyo with Nikkei Asia. One is Open AI with Microsoft, the second is Google, and "the third is the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence." - Brad Smith, Vice Chairman of Microsoft. - Source.
Just as China leveraged blockchain to create a central bank digital currency (CBDC) literally years before other nations, it will create its own “National” ChatGPT and national LLM where it will centralize funding directly from the CCP.
So why would it do this? It’s all about what the UK Calls “Sovereign AI”. The UK have been thinking about this a lot of late: Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan have pledged an initial £100 million (about $124.5 million) to establish a Foundation Model Taskforce. The team will develop AI that ideally makes the country "globally competitive," and will work with the industry to make these systems safer and more reliable.
Meanwhile China is much more innovative than the UK, with far far deeper pockets. We have to assume the likes of BAAI have been working on a National grade foundational model for quite some time.
Don’t underestimate China’s ability to leverage and weaponize Generative A.I. to its own strategic interests including military, space-tech, biotech, cybersecurity and so forth. Microsoft has an incredible collaboration with China, so it would know. Few corporations on the planet have done more than Microsoft to elevate China’s A.I. research and capabilities.
Brand Smith went on:
"Who's ahead and who's behind can change a bit from one part of the year to another, but one thing has been absolutely constant: the gap is almost always measured in months, not years," Smith said, calling the race to innovate "enormously competitive."
China of course have ByteDance, Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent and others all with their own version of ChatGPT and GPT-4. There are even others like SenseTime that can impress.
