Hello Everyone,

It’s June and I’m on semi-vacation. Still when big news arrives, you have to take notice.

Two events seem most notable to me in the last few weeks, Apple’s partnership with OpenAI, and Saudi Arabia’s backing of a prominent Chinese AI startup. These two events make June in AI a bit more eventful than they would have been otherwise.

I’ve for a long while been talking about Chinese Generative AI startup champions that are beginning to emerge. Oddly, the west doesn’t cover them much, and people like Eric Schmidt have insinuated that China is up to 2 years behind the U.S. in Generative AI capabilities. Let me just tell you, that’s simply not actually going to be the case.

In no particular order, here are some of the Chinese Generative AI startups that are indeed “catching up”. They might also have other ways of catching up.

China’s New Breed of Generative AI Model Builders Includes

  1. Baichuan

  2. 01.AI

  3. MiniMax

  4. Moonshot AI

  5. Zhipu

The bottleneck of AI chips bans, talent and pressure the U.S. is exerting on China geopolitically and in the semiconductor supply chain, is actually forcing China, Huawei, its BigTech and AI focused startups all to innovate faster than the U.S. is capable of doing. In other words, trade and AI chip bans are highly likely to backfire in the long-run here.

  • In this article I try to analyze why that might be.

  • I analyze how American monopoly capitalism isn’t the right model to lead innovation any longer.

  • Saudi Aramco and Softbank (Japan with ties to the Middle East) still have a lot of chips left to play in the future of Generative AI.
