It was only a matter of time. OpenAI’s mission is supposedly “to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.” But with Generative AI and a world where real military conflict is now not only possible, but probable, the temptation is too great to get big Government contracts.
The Pentagon has its eye on the leading OpenAI, which this week mysteriously softened its ban on ‘military use’. According to reporting by The Intercept, Wired, The Wall Street Journal, and The Information, it’s now clear OpenAI works with the Pentagon including on projects related to cybersecurity.
ChatGPT ushered in a world that lowered the bar for criminals to engage in phishing, build cybersecurity malware code, engage in fraud and extortion just because of the arrival of its GPT software. The company however claims to be working to prevent abuse, provide transparency on AI-generated content, and improve access to accurate voting information.
The PR of OpenAI and the reality appears to be two very different realities. If the Pentagon has a contract with OpenAI, then military escalation of AI technologies truly becomes possible and more likely in the coming years. OpenAI getting involved would make it inevitable. Can you imagine the world that will lead to?
