Grok 3: Elon Musk's xAI unveils new AI model to rival ChatGPT, DeepSeek - The Economic Times

Generative AI is changing our search behaviors, and it isn’t just Perplexity or ChatGPT search any longer.

A lot of the people I talk to who are heavy power users of AI on a daily basis use xAI’s Grok 3 for daily search. While there have been many articles about the agentic Deep Research tools, I have not seen as many guides on DeepSearch. While some of us use Perplexity, Genspark or ChatGPT, xAI’s DeepSearch is really useful especially if you use X/Twitter.

Grok 3's DeepSearch is a search engine that uses AI agent technology to access the internet and provide detailed, real-time answers. As you know in my community of readers I prioritize practical guides on AI when I can. I asked Jeff Morhous for a guide. We expect Grok 4 to be released in late 2025 roughly competing with GPT-5.

Jeff Morhous writes the Augmented Engineer, and is a software engineer who has really caught my eye in his coverage especially for guides. Jeff is a senior software engineer and writer. He’s super excited about how AI is changing the software development industry, and he mostly writes for people looking to use artificial intelligence to build better software.

Why use DeepSearch for Search?

So why use xAI’s DeepSearch instead of Google or another search bot? However you feel about Elon Musk, this is a tool actually worth trying:

  • Deep search excels at understanding search intent, which is the underlying goal behind your query.

  • DeepSearch is widely recognized for its ability to provide more comprehensive and nuanced answers compared to standard search methods.

  • DeepSearch goes beyond simple information retrieval by synthesizing key information, reasoning through conflicting facts and opinions, and distilling clarity from complexity.

I hope this article and guide makes you more curious about trying DeepSearch.

What is Google’s AI Mode

AI Mode is like a more advanced version of AI Overviews. With the AI Mode experiment in Google Search, you can ask anything and get a helpful AI-powered response with the ability to explore further with follow-up questions and helpful web links.

This new AI Mode expands what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning, thinking and ways of interacting.

April, 2025.

AI-driven tools like ChatGPT and Grok have been great at generating text for some time, but only recently have they developed search capabilities like Google.

When you ask a typical LLM a question, it uses “complete the next token” (AKA fancy autocomplete) to generate your answer. This makes these models great at recalling information that’s prevalent across the internet, but it has 2 major shortcomings.

  1. These models are missing recent information (anything past its training cutoff)

  2. These models know plenty about things that are common across the web and little about things that are not common across the web

If you have a question about a recent or upcoming event, Google has been a better option that Grok or ChatGPT for some time. Perplexity, an AI-driven search tool has been a great middle-ground, but all the major LLM tools have started getting into AI-driven search lately.

🤔 What is Grok 3’s DeepSearch good for?

Grok 3 (by xAI) recently launched with a “DeepSearch” option, giving this knockout model an extra helpful search function. It’s fast and solves both of the 2 big shortcomings of LLMs. It can search the web for recent information and also to annotate its thinking with less common information.

It’s most helpful to think of DeepSearch as an agent for searching the web and summarizing results. In this way, it’s comparable to Perplexity or even ChatGPT “with Search”. Grok 3 is a standout model, and adding search via “DeepSearch” makes it easy to get recent and niche information.

🤞So how good is Grok 3’s DeepSearch?
