Hey Everyone,

Now that we are into February, 2024 it might be time to talk about some of the Global Risks reports that were published recently.

Read the World Economic Forum Report.

Now the WEF claims that their research behind the Global Risks Report 2024 is grounded in insights from more than 1,400 business, government, and academic leaders. Drawing from global and local expertise, the report provides a diverse perspective on risk.

The report explores the global risk landscape in this phase of transition and governance systems being stretched beyond their limit. It analyses the most severe perceived risks to economies and societies over two and 10 years, in the context of these influential forces.

Activists Demand More German Military Support For Ukraine

Here are some of my Top Global Risks for 2024 as I see them.

  • China’s debt crisis and deflation becomes more serious.

  • Ukraine lacks the funding required to defend itself as it loses a war of attribution.

  • Escalation of the Gaza & Middle East Conflict.

  • The U.S. commercial real-estate thanks to the double-whammy of higher interest rates and lower demand for office space following the Covid-19 pandemic sparks a banking crisis.

  • Global geopolitical conflicts further to erupt like Taiwan, North Korea, Iran, etc…

  • A Trump Presidency increasing another round of global inflation. Trump may also choose to strategically abandon Taiwan.

  • AI being mismanaged in its military applications. Already signs this is occurring with autonomous suicide drones.

The WEF Summary

  1. Misinformation and disinformation

  2. Extreme Weather Events

  3. Societal polarization

  4. Cyber insecurity

  5. Interstate armed conflict

  6. Lack of economic opportunity

  7. Inflation

  8. Involuntary migration

  9. Economic downturn

  10. Pollution

The WEF seems to make the argument that environmental threats are on the rise in the 2024 to 2034 period.

Thoughts on AI and Global Risk

2024 marks the beginning of a new period where existential risks to civilization begin to overlap more and more with A.I.

In my view, geopolitical risks, the end of globalization and new forms of neo-nationalism could present more risks of A.I. development than the collective benefits of AI for humanity.

Neither does OpenAI’s public relations on how its tech doesn’t lead to more bioterrorism (using biological weapons that AI helps develop) make me feel better about this.

A.I. has and will increasingly make the world a more dangerous place. Without referendum or reasonable caution, or even safety orientated A.I. regulations, we have unleashed, in the 2020s, AI into the wild that profoundly augments risks to civilization.
