The NYC Department of Education has banned the use of ChatGPT by students and teachers in New York City schools as there are serious concerns about its use hampering learning and leading to misinformation.
The ban was first reported byΒ Chalkbeat, which confirmed the New York City Department of Education imposed it. The organization manages the largest school district in the U.S., so others might follow with similar decisions.

They also have a Facebook Group especially for teachers and educators. Clearly a lot of School and education workers are concerned about these tools and their potential impact on kids and prompt-engineering, cheating and so forth.
Historically some claim that ChatGPT is an βiPhone moment for A.I. adoptionβ and compare it with various historical precedents. For instance, the invention of the telephone in 1876 was met with simultaneous amazement and trepidation. Is Microsoftβs Bing Chatbot the same thing though? Widely expected to go live as early as this March.
ChatGPTβs role in education is a work in progress and there are currently many active disputes.
