As Anthropic gets set for a $2 Trillion IPO in just over a month, it’s getting close to unleashing its version of RSI in biology, drug discovery, biochemistry and biotechnology. What could go wrong? Recursive self-improving AI or today’s version of it should not be unleashed on drug research and biotechnology.
Both Dario Amodei and his angel investor, Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis have made incredible claims about AI curing Cancer in the next decade. Predictions such like AI being capable of accelerating biological research by roughly 10x, compressing 50 to 100 years of biological and medical progress into just 5 to 10 years. But at what cost? Anthropic will tread dangerous ground without hardly any oversight.
I’m getting increasingly alarmed by the compute Anthropic will have at its disposal to put its world-leading models at the intersection of biotechnology in the 2030s. The beginning of this dangerous turn was when Anthropic lured Eric Kauderer-Abrams who joined Anthropic in August, 2025. He initially came on board to co-lead life-sciences R&D and partnerships, and currently serves as the company's Head of Life Sciences, overseeing its wet lab operations and AI-driven drug discovery programs. Then in June Nobel laureate John Jumper, co-creator of the protein-structure AI AlphaFold, left Google DeepMind after nine years to join the AI startup juggernaut Anthropic.
America’s leading monopoly LLM lab will be trying to do what so many other Pharma startups have failed to do, use AI to accelerate drug discovery. But it will and it has already conducted dangerous experiments along the lines of accelerating RSI in biology. It has now come out that Anthropic has set up a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct physical biology experiments, as the company moves beyond computer-based research in its effort to develop treatments for rare diseases, or so it claims publically.
At a time when fears of AI are gripping the public, Anthropic will push the limits of the intersection of the world’s frontier models and our understanding of pharma and biotechnology. Anthropic this week claimed Claude discovered a novel enzyme system.
