The consumer AI landscape around personal agents is going to be heating up in 2027. I always suspected Anysphere’s Cursor product was going to be a problem for OpenAI. On August 14th, SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor for $60 Billion. With Meta pushing products like Muse in B2C, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and its features might be tested on all sides. Even as Chinese model builders test OpenAI’s models on the token share angle. With a crisis of competition and alignment OpenAI has decided to delay its IPO till sometime next year.
Suddenly in the later quarter of 2026 SpaceX AI appears to be gaining some traction with Grok Bot. Grok Bot is an autonomous AI agent platform developed in collaboration with Cursor. It is included directly as part of paid Cursor subscription plans (such as Cursor Pro and Teams).
Grok Bot and Muse Could Erode ChatGPT Usage in the next 18 Months
Grok Bot appears to be taking a niche that would have gone to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work or ChatGPT Operator. While it’s too soon to say in September, 2026, it’s quite possible Meta Muse and SpaceX AI’s Grok Bot might be products that can take some customers and their time that would have been spent in ChatGPT previously.

Meta's standalone personal AI agent after Billions spent on compute and talent is called Muse and it launched on September 8, 2026, and early indicators show rapid adoption too. Will OpenAI build a “Codex Bot” to compete with Grok Bot? How will they take on Muse? Is ChatGPT Work going to be competitive with Claude Code? OpenAI have too many products and outside of ChatGPT and Codex, not many are well differentiated or have a defined brand. Anthropic’s Claude Cowork is somewhat similar to Grok Bot in that it’s a bit more accessible. Overall since ChatGPT there really hasn’t been a killer B2C AI product, outside of Google Gemini. Now with Gemini 3.8 with Extended Thinking. In a world of multi-agent collaboration, the way we use AI might shift a lot in the next 18 months.
Autonomous Teammate Systems
For me, Meta’s Muse and SpaceX’s Grok Bot make chatbots a bit less relevant in that these are about AI as a utility, helper and assistant in accomplishing tasks. They feature agentic capabilities that have:
Isolated Cloud Machines
Tools with asynchronous & background execution
Human-in-the-loop safeguards
Proactive goal orientated assistants
Grok Bot is aided by X user integration and so even if the Grok chatbot was a relative failure compared to ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude - Grok Bot could accelerate SpaceX AI’s Enterprise adoption and Cursor’s real world utility. It remains to be seen what Anthropic and OpenAI come up with in this vertical. Grok Bot was first introduced about a month ago on August 11th that sounds a lot like Meta’s Muse, branded as an AI teammates you can give real work to.
Grok Bot also seems more like a primarily B2C product but with strong B2B support. We’re still seemingly a far way away from the kind of AI companion that is truly capable even four years after ChatGPT first launched which is astounding to me.
