2024: Silicon Valley Tries to "Open-Source" AGI
Always a new rally cry of the elites. The Year of Open-source SLMs.
Hey Everyone,
While Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse narrative hasn’t worked out very well thus far, he has a new crusade to save META 0.00%↑ ‘s stock, in spite of FAIR / Meta AI bleeding machine learning engineer and researcher talent in an exodus to Generative AI startups in recent years.
As OpenAI arrogantly aim to replace ‘median humans’ with its commercial conception of AGI, or artificial general intelligence, other firms have noticed how well it has produced perceived value in terms of market valuation terms.
Seven hours (7) ago Mark Zuckerberg wrote one of the most important messages on Facebook he has ever made. Let me reproduce it for you:
Some updates on our AI efforts. Our long term vision is to build general intelligence, open source it responsibly, and make it widely available so everyone can benefit. We're bringing our two major AI research efforts (FAIR and GenAI) closer together to support this. We're currently training our next-gen model Llama 3, and we're building massive compute infrastructure to support our future roadmap, including 350k H100s by the end of this year -- and overall almost 600k H100s equivalents of compute if you include other GPUs. Also really excited about our progress building new AI-centric computing devices like Ray Ban Meta smart glasses. Lots more to come soon.

While Sam Altman has made AGI a central motif in OpenAI’s marketing pitch around ChatGPT and iterations of GPT-3.5, 4, 5, expect more companies to clone this approach.
Over the years, FAIR has open-sourced research code, data sets, and tools like PyTorch, fastText, FAISS, and Detectron. Including Llama, Llama 2. Meta is saying its AR glasses can be part of its approach to democratizing general intelligence. So Facebook’s Ray-Ban AR glasses might be yet another AI device.
A lot more juicy details here.
